9 month old Nigeria baby recovers after highly complex Ventricular Atrial Septal Defect (AVSD / VSD) surgery in India

This delicate baby suffering from acyanotic congenital heart disease, presented with feeding difficulty, fast breathing, recurrent respiratory infections, severe stridor, and failure to thrive, and was diagnosed with a large perimembranous Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) with inlet extension and a fossa ovalis atrial septal defect, along with phenotypic features of Trisomy 21.

The patient and family was received at New Delhi Airport and rushed to heart hospital and immediately admitted. He was first stabilized with non-invasive CPAP ventilation, broad-spectrum antibiotics, decongestive therapy to control respiratory infection.
Following stabilization, the patient was taken up for high-risk open heart surgery by team led by world renowned Paediatric Heart Surgeon. The surgical interventional that lasted more than 10 hours successfully achieved trans-right atrial Dacron patch closure of the Ventricular and Atrial septal defects.
During the post-operative stage the patient was provided intensive transient respiratory and hemodynamic support with inotropes and diuretics, gradual advancement of enteral to full oral feeds, and initiation of thyroxine for low thyroid hormone levels. There were no major complications after the surgery and the patient rapidly recovered.
At the time of discharge about ten days after admission, the patient was hemodynamically stable, in normal sinus rhythm, breathing room air with 100% oxygen saturation, tolerating feeds, and had a well-healed surgical wound, with echocardiography showing successful defect closure with no significant residual shunt and preserved ventricular function.
