Cervical disc is a piece of specialized tissue that separates the vertebral bones of the spinal column in the neck and Nucleoplasty is an advanced minimally invasive procedure used to reduce disc pressure in patients suffering from discogenic (disc related) backache. During the procedure, an instrument is introduced through a needle and placed into the center of the disc where a series of channels are created to remove tissue from the nucleus. How is Nucleoplasty Performed?
The procedure is performed in an advanced surgical center with fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance. Nucleoplasty is done with the patient lying on the stomach. Intravenous sedation is given to help with comfort and relaxation. The skin is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and the back is numbed with a local anesthetic before the procedure is performed. The patient is monitored with an electrocardiogram, blood pressure cuff and blood oxygen-monitoring device.
Medical evaluation includes a physical exam. Diagnostic tests such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), steroid injection or discography may be conducted to diagnose and locate the symptomatic disc herniation and determine if the procedure is appropriate.
Nucleoplasty requires the patient to lie on his/her stomach for the lumbar procedure or back for the cervical procedure. This is typically performed with minimal anesthesia requirements. A small nick is made in the skin near the spine, and a needle is inserted. The decompression device, called a SpineWand, is then inserted through the needle into the disc and activated to remove tissue. The device and the needle are removed and the small nick is covered with a bandage.
Patients are required to remain for observation for one to two hours after the procedure. Often patients are then released to rest for one to three days with limited sitting or walking.Post a Query
